La Réunion is an island in the Indian Ocean that is an overseas department and region of France. It covers 2,512 km2 (970 sq mi) and as of January 2023, it had a population of 873,102. Administratively, La Réunion is divided into 24 communes (municipalities) grouped into four arrondissements. The territory has developed the same urban mobility planning approach as mainland France based on the Mobility Law that gives the regions the role to coordinate the development of mobility policies and plans through the establishment of a mobility contract with local authorities and public transport operators.
