Cameroon

The population of Cameroon was estimated to be 27.2 million in 2021 with a land area of 475,442 square kilometres (183,569 sq mi). Cameroon is composed of 10 semi-autonomous regions, each under the administration of an elected Regional Council. Each region is headed by a presidentially appointed governor. Cameroon is undergoing rapid population growth. With over 55% of the population living in cities, it is the most urbanised country in Central Africa, and it is expected that the urban population will reach 22 million by 2035.

The geographical, economic, and social context of the country is complex and diversified but is largely dominated by two major cities, Douala, economic capital and Yaoundé, administrative capital.

Cameroon has apparently adopted a National Urban Mobility Policy (NUMP) prepared by MYC that provides an analysis of current issues and proposes an urban mobility vision and objectives along with the following actions:

  • Strengthening the governance of urban mobility.
  • Improved funding for urban mobility.
  • Restructuring and modernization of public transport.
  • Better use of transport technologies

There are two cities both of which are metropolitan areas with Urban Mobility Plans online with a total population of 7.8 million people. Both plans are in French and both plans were drawn up by consultants with support from AFD and MYC. The cities range in size from 3.6 million people (Douala) to 4.1 million people (Yaoundé).
