Switzerland

Switzerland is a federal republic made up of 26 cantons (member states). Each canton has its constitution, legislature (parliament), government and courts. It has a land area of 41,285 square kilometres (15,940 sq mi) and an estimated population of 8.7 million inhabitants. About 85% of the population live in urban areas. In 2017 the Swiss Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications published an orientation framework on the future of Swiss mobility in 2040. It aims to accomplish full efficiency – meaning minimizing natural and financial resources – in all aspects of Swiss mobility by 2040.  Most of the political support for intelligent- and smart mobility arises among cantons and municipalities.

There are two cities with Urban Mobility Plans online with a total population of 1.6 million people. The cities range in size from 173,960 people (Basel) to 1.4 million people (Zürich). Information on both plans is available in English.
